Thriving Community Garden Ready to Grow

Rafaele JoudryCommunity, Sustainability

Over the past years, we’ve been transforming a patch of clay and gravel under an old metal pole domed structure, known as the TripleSpan, into something special. What started as a bare space is now 500 square meters of thriving garden beds, thanks to the dedication of volunteers who run it as a community garden. It has become a real hub for local food, sustainability, and connection.

One of the most exciting things to grow from this space is our mini CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) program. For the past nine months, eight subscribers have received fresh produce each week, and it’s going strong. We also sell extra veggies “à la carte” at our Village Pantry, making sure more people can access locally grown, chemical-free food.

Composting is a true community effort, with veggie scraps from neighbors, supercharged with chook manure from our free-range hens.

Beyond the garden, we have some amazing food-focused initiatives:

  • Village Pantry – A volunteer-run store selling mostly bulk dry goods, sourced as ethically as possible.
  • Chook Group – Seven families care for a mobile chook tractor with about 50 hens, selling and distributing eggs.
  • Coffee Cart Café – The heart of the village, serving home-cooked organic food and bringing people together.
  • Young fruit trees – Planted as part of our landscaping plan, now needing a management and harvesting strategy.

In the coming year, we’re hoping to scale up. We have just under an acre of flat land in the process of being prepped for cultivation, plus plenty of sheds and infrastructure that could be used for post-harvest processing, seed raising, and more. We also have access to a 45-megalitre dam to support future food production. Beyond that, there’s room to expand onto rural lots, incorporate the hundreds of fruit trees scattered around the village, and work with volunteers to create a truly integrated food system.

Now, we’re looking for the right person to take this to the next level. We’d love to find a farmer or market gardener who wants to turn this into a livelihood, with the full support of our community. If that sounds like you—or if you just want to get your hands in the soil and be part of something meaningful—we’d love to hear from you!
