Don’t miss our upcoming Biochar Workshop hosted by Stephen Joseph, a world-renowned biochar researcher, educator, and expert! Learn the background, theory, and principles of sustainable biochar production and participate in making enhanced biochar in a highly efficient, compact biochar kiln. Plus, you’ll be able to take home some enriched biochar at the end of the day!

What is Biochar?
Biochar is a charcoal-like substance made by burning organic materials from agricultural and forestry wastes in a controlled process called pyrolysis. Unlike regular charcoal, biochar is produced to reduce contamination and safely store carbon.

Last week a group of ecovillagers visited the @arc

Last week a group of ecovillagers visited the @arc_entotech plant in Somersby, which has developed a system to use Black Soldier Fly larvae to help process household waste.

This magnificent fly lays eggs that hatch and are hungry for organic waste in plastic containers and bags. They eat every morsel leaving the clean plastic to be processed into bricks of synthetic coal, and in the process produce the best organic fertiliser for our gardens. They can also provide us with insect protein for high protein stock feed (eg chicken) – delicious, although we weren’t given sample tastes! As adults they are done eating and just happy to lay more eggs for the whole sustainable process to start again.

We were very inspired to see new systems for tackling a complex problem, and hope one day to have one of their systems at the Ecovillage!
